  | Bonnie Bennett (Katerina Graham) is Elena Gilbert's long time best friend. When she went to visit her grandmother for the weekend, she was told that she is a Salem witch and that her grandmother is one as well. After learning a lot about the history of the Salem witches, her grandmother teaches her a few things and how to use her magic. Bonnie was told not to tell anyone, but she tells Elena because she is her best friend. She then shows Elena some of her powers and Elena is completely amazed. Although Elena at first tries to keep Bonnie in the dark about the vampires in Mystic Falls, Bonnie runs into some trouble with Elena and ends up learning that Damon and Stefan are vampires. Bonnie had always sensed something dark and evil about Stefan but tried not to let it bother her because Stefan makes Elena happy. However, she can't stand Damon because he tried to kill her when her ancestor Emily possessed her body to destroy a crystal that could unlock the 27 vampires sealed in a tomb under Fells Church. Plus, Damon was feeding on Caroline so that doesn't help Bonnie take a liking to him, either. When Stefan and Elena betray Damon to save their loved ones, Damon is out of control and won't trust anyone. Elena then goes to him and says that he can trust her that they will get Katherine out of the tomb. Bonnie and her grandmother agree to open the tomb just to let Katherine out and no one else so that Damon will leave town. Come to find out, Bonnie's grandmother did unlock the tomb but the spell keeps vampires from coming out. When Stefan goes into the tomb because he hears Elena scream, Bonnie begs her grandmother to help her open the seal or she will do it herself. They open the tomb, but the strength her grandmother had to use to do it ultimately kills her. Bonnie now blames Damon and Stefan for her grandmother's death, especially since the spell failed and the other vampires were let out of the tomb.
