Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) is a high school girl living in Mystic Falls. In May of 2009, she lost both her mother and her father in a tragic car accident where her parents drove their car off a bridge. She was in the car as well and was the only one who survived. Going through a very emotional summer, she returns to school telling herself that if anyone asks if she is okay, she will simply say 'yes' even if it is not enitrely true.
On the first day of school, she meets a mysterious new guy who was completed attracted her attention. As they get to know each other and start dating, she realizes that there is so much she doesn't really know about him. She begins asking him questions and all he gives her is vague answers. Getting suspicous, she starts doing some research and figures out that he is a vampire. At first she is scared, and then she wants some real answers. He gives her all the information she asks for and although Elena still has feelings for him, she tells him that she will keep his secret but she cannot be with him.
After several unfortunate events where Stefan tries to help out and keep Elena safe, they realize that they can no longer live without each other. They go through many obstacles and Elena finds out that Stefan knows a lot more about her than she thought. Although it is difficult being with a vampire, Elena knows that she would do anything for him as he would for her, even if it meant no longer existing. Each obstacle they encounter brings them closer together.
