Jeremy Gilbert (Steven R. McQueen) is the 15-year-old brother of Elena Gilbert. In the beginning of the series, Jeremy is a very troubled teenager who deals with the death of his parents by doing drugs. Although Jeremy used to be much closer to Elena, with each episode they seem to be drifting apart, especially with all the secrets that she has to keep from him.
The summer before the school year, right after Jeremy's parents died, he begins hanging out with a girl named Vicki. When school starts, she continuously tells him to stay away from her because she doesn't want people to know that she slept with someone younger than her. She also doesn't want him to mess things up with Tyler, the guy she likes. Jeremy has feelings for her and continues to show up at her job and tries to talk to her at school. She seems to only come around him when she wants drugs. Once Jeremy finally started dating her, Damon ended up turning her into a vampire and Stefan ultimately has to kill her as she is about to kill Elena. Damon then has to erase Jeremy's memory since Elena did not want him to hurt anymore than he already was.
Jeremy begins doing better in school and starts hanging out with a girl named Anna. Although Jeremy is unaware, she is a vampire and is determined to get his ancestor's diary from him so she can figure out how to open the tomb and get her mother out of there. When the tomb is opened and her mother is let out, she still continues to see him. It is obvious that she is beginning to have feelings for him but what she is unaware of is that he is using her to become a vampire. He thinks that Vicki might have been turned into a vampire so he wants to become one as well so he can be with her.
