 I'm saying this because of Elena. She's big on trust. The more you try to hide whatever it is you're hiding, the more determined she's gonna be to figure it out. | Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig) is Elena Gilbert's ex-boyfriend and is on the high school football team. When Stefan Salvatore comes into town and starts dating Elena, Matt is very skeptical of him and tells Elena that he is not giving up on her yet. He believes that there is still something between them. When Matt's sister Vicki gets bitten by an "animal", he sees Stefan in the hospital (when he is clearing Vicki's memory of what bit her), he questions him about what he was doing there. Matt seems to think that something is up with him but he isn't quite sure what that is. When Damon turns Vicki into a vampire and Stefan ends up killing her to protect Elena, Damon has to erase Jeremy's memory (Vicki's boyfriend and Elena's little brother) so that he thinks that Vicki left town and isn't coming back. Matt is even more angry with Stefan because of this because he thinks that he is involved with why she left town. As time goes by, Matt warms up to Stefan and they become friends. Matt also starts spending a lot of time with Caroline Forbes, one of Elena's friends. They eventually start dating, which is awkward for both of them at first, but they work it out. Caroline seems to be very jealous of his relationship with Elena because they are very close. When the town finds out that Vicki is dead, Matt doesn't want Caroline around but he doesn't mind if Elena is, in fact he embraces her comfort. Zach Roerig has also starred on "Friday Night Lights", "As the World Turns", "The Prince", "Split Decision", "The Assasination of a High School President" and "Strawberry Wine". He grew up in Northwestern Ohio and currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia.
