Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) is a vampire struggling to live among human beings. In 1864, when he was still human, he fell in love with vampire Katherine Pierce who was compelling him not to speak a word of their romance to his older brother Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder). What Stefan was unaware of was that Katherine was also in an intimate relationship with Damon. As the town of Mystic Falls gathered up all the vampires to burn them in Fells Church, Stefan and Damon watched as Katherine was taken away.
Stefan Salvatore, a 145 year old vampire, has returned to Mystic Falls after many years because of his strong attraction to Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), a high school girl who looks very similar to Katherine. As Stefan falls in love with her, he does everything he can to keep his secret from Elena. Despite his efforts to keep Elena in the dark, she keeps asking him questions about why he is always so secretive. When Stefan refuses to give her an honest answer, Elena goes searching for the answers herself. She eventually figures it out and after Stefan answers all her questions, she decides to no longer be with him.
All the while, Stefan is constantly having to deal with issues with his vampire brother Damon Salvatore and his humorous outlook on every situation. Stefan only feeds on animals, however Damon drinks human blood, making him much stronger than Stefan. This plays an important role in the relationship between Stefan and his brother. Damon seems to also have some kind of attraction to Elena which frustrates Stefan sometimes more than he can handle. Stefan keeps telling his brother how he wants him gone and to stay away from Elena. But as the story goes on, it is evident that the two brothers really do care about each other but seem to have an odd way of showing it.
After a few serious situations between Stefan and Elena, they get back together and try to have as normal of a relationship as possible. Stefan being a vampire, this doesn’t always go as planned. But each obstacle they encounter brings them closer together. Stefan would do anything for Elena, even if it meant no longer existing.

Paul Wesley was born and raised in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He currently lives in Atlanta, Georga, where “The Vampire Diaries” films, as well as Los Angeles, California.
